Little free libraries to expand in Dorchester County

CAMBRIDGE, Md. – The Dorchester Retired Educators Association is making sure everyone in the community has the opportunity to read.

Under their new initiative the organization has built nearly a dozen of unique posts that hold free books donated by the community.

According to the Retired Educators Association Secretary, Cindy Ruark, the group started last year, but the county has helped by funding for these posts to have them in places like the Sailwinds Park in Cambridge, as well as in Vienna and Hurlock.

Ruark said the posts are extremely beneficial for those who may not be able to make it to the library.

“They don’t have to have a library membership card, they don’t have to have a ride to the library,” said Ruark.

“Of course the library is a wonderful choice for books, but it’s just an easier way to make sure people have access to reading materials,” said Ruark.

Ruark also said the organization has been so successful that now they have a furnished library in the Dorchester County Public Schools Maintenence Building for people to find books.
