Indian River School District launches SafeAbility Program for students with disabilities
GEORGETOWN, Del. – The Indian River School District has launched a brand new program that will increase the safety for students with disabilities at Howard T. Ennis School.
It’s called the SafeAbility Program. The district is teaming up with the Georgetown Police Department to create a unique curriculum to expand safety topics, the content, and the delivery. They will teach three primary subjects: school, social, and life safety.
A detective, whose expertise is on school safety, is even going to come in to give them tools on how to be aware of their surroundings and how to protect themselves online.
Chief R.L. Hughes for Georgetown Police Department says, “We at Georgetown Police Department, we pride ourselves as being the guardians of Georgetown, and that mindset for us is to take care of everyone and that’s what we want to do. For us, this is community policing at its core.”
The series will kick off during Special Education Week next week and from there, they will host a different topic every single month for the rest of the school year.
We’re told this is their first year doing it but they want to continue growing it for years to come.
