BERLIN, Md. – Atlantic General Urology has announced they are now offering a targeted prostate biopsy to help detect cancer earlier.
Men on the Eastern Shore typically would have to undergo multiple random biopsies in order to detect cancerous lesions, however, the newly offered UroNav MRI fusion-guided biopsy will allow doctors to use an MRI image to pinpoint the exact tissue area to biopsy and visualize the prostate and any potential lesions more clearly and in real-time. This will allow for earlier detection of high risk prostate cancer, leading to the possibility for earlier interventions and fewer potential complications as a result of treatment.
This technology is this first on the Eastern Shore. Previously, patients had to be referred to providers in Washington D.C. or Baltimore in order to undergo this type of diagnostic.
We’re told that Dr. James Cherry, a urologist at Atlantic General Hospital, performed the first UroNav MRI fusion-guided biopsy on the Eastern Shore in late September.
“Until now it would require going across the bridge to Baltimore or D.C. to have this kind of a biopsy done. So to now have it available here on the Eastern Shore, it’s great because patients don’t have to travel, they can do it close to home,” said Cherry.
