‘MidShore Meals Till Monday’ provides food for students after snowfall causes school closures
CAMBRIDGE, Md. “When kids are used to getting at least two meals a day at school, breakfast and lunch. Now they’re not getting that,” Dorchester County Health Department Community Outreach Worker Jan Baker said.
Monday’s snowfall closed schools across Delmarva, leaving many students without access to food. Yet, parents in Dorchester County got a helping hand from MidShore Meals Till Monday. “Since they didn’t go back we were concerned that there might be families that need a little extra food for their children,” Bishop said.
The organization’s Director Leslie Bishop says they gave out around 70 bags of food to families in need. The day even turned into an all hands on deck effort with help from the county’s health department. “We gotta call from these nice ladies from Meals Till Monday saying they have a few extra packages of meals to give away and we know many who could use those extra meals,” Baker said. “Because we’re not even sure that the kids are going back tomorrow and they’re calling for bad weather on Friday. So whatever we can do to help, that’s what we’re here for,” Bishop said.
As students continue facing school closures and delays, I’m told parents should know that they have resources they can use right in their own backyard. “Families have been impacted greatly and I think this will really help lessen the burden on them. So they’re really excited and I feel good helping them,” Baker said.
As of this afternoon, Dorchester County Schools will be on a 2-hour delay for students return Thursday, January 6th.
MidShore Meals Till Monday tells 47ABC they will also be in Vienna at their food pantry this week with frozen meats and other non-perishable items for those in need. They also say that parents should check their facebook page for more bag distributions this week as well.
