Senior dinner brings announcement to do more for senior citizens in SBY

SALISBURY, Md. – Salisbury leaders hosted their 6th annual Senior Christmas Dinner and Gift Giveaway on Saturday, honoring senior citizens and giving back.

Salisbury officials say senior citizens are the foundation of our community.

“I’m sure all of our senior citizens have contributed so much to the community and never seem to get anything back,” says a Salisbury senior citizen, Gail Hull-Tarrance. She adds, “Being honored for the work that I do, seen and unseen makes me feel so good inside.”

Hull-Tarrance tells us she’s is a long-time Salisbury resident, and dedicated over 20 years of her life as a daycare provider. City leaders say she and other senior residents deserve recognition for their role in the community.

“Some of them don’t have anyone to do anything for them so this is the way we give back,” says event organizer and council member, April Jackson. Mayor Jake Day also attended the event and adds, “We’re proud to volunteer and just give back and help them out and remind them that they’re loved during this time of year.”

Mayor Day also announced he would be implementing a senior advisory committee made up of senior citizens and agencies such as MAC.

“Whether or not we’re the right agency, we want to listen we want to help and I feel confident that my administration can help people get things done,” says Mayor Day.

Councilwoman Jackson says she has a soft spot for senior citizens, and whether or not there is a committee, she says she’ll always be in their corner to make sure they’re taken care of.

“There’s always a need to help period no matter where you’re at, we are the arms and legs and the eyes for the people who are most needed,” says Jackson.

Hull-Tarrance also tells 47 ABC, senior citizens themselves will play an important role in that effort.

“It takes a whole community to do this job, not one person. and we as senior citizens have got to get involved and make sure they do what they say they’re going to do.” She also tells us, she will be holding Mayor Day accountable for the announcement. Hull-Tarrance says she wants to make sure senior citizens’ voices are heard.
