Wor-Wic’s community garden gives produce to students in need

Wor-Wic Community College is providing some assistance to their students through their community garden.
Over 67% of community college students suffer from food insecurity while in school. That decision was made last year and in the time that has passed, the garden has grown. There are now 10 different beds.
This volunteer project is made up of student groups and organizations who take care of the garden. We're told this is a tool to help students achieve their maximum potential.
Wor-Wic President, Dr. Ray Hoy says, "And in order to come to school and to be successful, we needed one more tool to help them in that success and that's to help deal with some of the food insecurity issues that they have, so they can focus on their studies."
In the food pantry inside the Hazel Center, students can go twice a month and get bags of food.
They've given away 6,000 pounds of food to over a thousand individuals since this began last fall.
It takes about $5,000 dollars a year to do this, so they are fund-raising to make sure the effort continues moving forward.
