“Survive, Revive and Thrive”: 21st Annual Breast Cancer Update

Breast Cancer

The 21st Annual Breast Cancer Update was put on Tuesday in Dover, by The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition. This year's theme was "Survive, Revive and Thrive".

Medical experts, survivors and speakers offered information on treatments and survivorship. Another resource that's available, that not many people might know about, are "nurse navigators". Some of these nurses say newly diagnosed patients find that it's an overwhelming process. So the role of a "nurse navigator" is to educate and provide support to help patients get through their cancer journey.

"We also do a lot of trouble shooting when they have issues with finances, medication and transportation. Any of those issues we trouble shoot and try to make sure that we solve those problems before they get out of hand," said Joanne Hutchinson, a nurse navigator.

One of the goals of this annual update is to create a larger sense of community for people impacted by breast cancer. Organizers say over 300 people attended Tuesday's event and it's put on every April, at no cost to the public.
