Senator Tim Kaine offers his opinion on potential soybean tariff

As an act of retaliation against the White House, China has announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on imports of US soybeans.

Last week we told you how this will hurt local farmers, now we're bringing you reaction from Senator Tim Kaine (D) and what he thinks about the tariff.

Senator Kaine says when the President first announced tariffs against China on aluminum and steel, he believed it would be bad for the economy.

He says the tariffs hurt more than help and now, Senator Kaine believes China is going after American Agriculture.

Senator Kaine says soybeans are the biggest component of our agriculture industry, and he thinks President Trump needs to take action to protect it.

Senator Kaine said, "I hope the President will back away from trade wars. It's no way to help American farmers. It's no way to help Virginia workers. If we want to help our economy, lets do something like invest in infrastructure for example, but starting trade wars is only a bad thing for farmers, foresters and our industries."

The U.S. is the number one producer of soybean.

The tariff has not been finalized.
