Local veterinarian gives insights on how allergy season can affect your pets

Humans aren't the only ones affected by allergy season. Our furry friends can also see similar symptoms due to pollen or the fresh bloom of flowers.

47 ABC spoke to a local veterinarian, Dr. Craig Metzner from Western Sussex Animal Hospital, to give us some insight.

We're told pets can get respiratory issues but it can also go through their skin. Just like our body reacts to poison ivy, that's how pets deal with allergies.

They can get itchy, which leads to secondary skin infections or ear infections and can cause them to start chewing on their paws and be restless.

"One of the simplest things you can do is use a good gentle oatmeal aloe shampoo, which will actually help just remove the pollens and the allergens of the dogs and cats fur," Dr. Metzner says.

Pet owners don't usually recognize the symptoms but the sleepless nights and constant itching are a big indicator.

If this continues to happen, seek professional care and get safe medications to treat your pet.
