Cape holds off Central in thriller

The Cape Henlopen Vikings pulled out an instant classic victory, defeating Sussex Central 16-14 on Friday night in Lewes.

Leading 16-7 in the fourth, Cape’s momentum began to fade when Central fullback Tim Jones scored his second touchdown of the night, bringing the lead to 16-14. After a great ensuing kick return from Curtis Purnell, Vikings running back Jerry Harden would cough the ball up with under five minutes remaining.

In their last possession, Central marched the ball down the field into the redzone, before being hampered by two holding penalties. The fouls would prompt them to attempt a 35-yard field goal with under 2 minutes remaining, which fell short. Cape was able to get one more first down and force Central to burn their remaining timeouts, to take the win.

Both teams are back in action on Friday night, Cape travels to Dover, while Sussex Central host Caesar Rodney.
