Ocean City Fire Department reminds residents to check their smoke detectors
OCEAN CITY, Md. – The Ocean City Fire Department is reminding residents to check their smoke alarms, especially as the weather starts to cool down.
Ryan Whittington is the community engagement officer for the Ocean City Fire Department, and emphasized the importance of the alert system.
“The importance of having a working smoke alarm is essential, and it is the first notification for a family to be able to escape their home early, when smoke or fire begins to build inside of a home.” Said Whittington.
The department is encouraging the public to test their alarms, replace the batteries if needed, and to check the expiration dates.
“The reality is, if your smoke detectors older than ten years of age, it needs to be replaced because the chances of it failing are much greater.” Said Whittington.
The effort to spread awareness regarding fire safety, becomes even more important as the temperature starts to drop and heaters turn on.
“The fact is that, statistics can provide you that 80% of home fires occur during the winter months.” Said Whittington. “The facts are, it could be your home, and you don’t want to be one of those statistics and so before it’s too late, make sure that you have a working smoke alarm in your home.”
