Somerset County Participates in Operation Green Light for Veterans

Westover, Md. — The Somerset County Health Department is giving residents a chance to show their support for veterans in the run-up to Veterans Day through Operation Green Light for Veterans.

Operation Green Light is a national movement to show support for veterans and raise awareness around the unique challenges they face. The health department is handing out green light bulbs so residents can light up their homes and businesses in support of veterans between Nov. 4-11.

“It’s pretty much to show them how much we appreciate them. A lot of times in the past, they haven’t always been welcomed back home. I would like to change that outlook, whether people still believe that or not. Because I think they’re very important,” said Shannon Frey, director of Somerset Local Behavior Health Authority with SCHD.

The program has existed in neighboring counties in year’s past, and Frey said this year the department had the funding available to participate.

The department said the initiative will also raise awareness of the many resources available to veterans and their families. And it’s a way for some to give back to the veterans and put a spotlight on veteran mental health.

“I feel like they deserve more than what our country gives them. And if it’s just a light bulb that I can give them, that’s what I’ll do. I think little appreciation goes a long way,” Frey said.

The bulbs can be picked up at the health department on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. and two are available for each household.
