Shore to Shore: Hidden Gem In Berlin Serves Up Colorful Snowballs And Family Traditions

BERLIN, Md. — A hidden gem in Berlin is serving up colorful snowballs packed with flavor. Locals say the small shop is worth finding in the latest edition of Shore to Shore, sponsored by Schell Brothers.

You might have to look twice to find it, but once you do, this little snowball stand is hard to forget, serving big flavors, colorful creations and plenty of charm.

Snowball stand owner Danielle Pohland said the business has been part of her life since she was 12.

“It actually started when I was 12 years old. I started working here. It was for my parents’ friend, and then it went up for sale that summer. I asked my parents to buy it for me, and then we’ve been here since. So, we’ve been here for 20 years,” Pohland said.

Pohland said the flavors may be sweet, but the memories are even sweeter. She grew up behind the stand, and now her children are growing up around it, too.

“I’m 32 years old now with three kids, and my kids just hop behind the window. My oldest makes snowballs now. He makes ice cream sundaes, loves to come in here, make a banana split, make himself a Polar Punch snowball,” Pohland said.

It’s not just the snowballs that catch your attention. The atmosphere is part of the experience, too.

Pohland said the family decided to expand the stand’s seasonal offerings, starting with Christmas trees.

“We decided to expand it a little bit more and bring a tradition to our family snowball stand. So, we decided to do Christmas trees, and then we had a great season. The community came out and supported us, and then we started to do what we wanted to do with pumpkins,” Pohland said.

The seasonal flair has now made its way into the snowballs, with fall-inspired offerings and flights.

But with snowballs being a Maryland delicacy, there was one important question to settle: Is it a snowball or a snow cone?

Pohland emphasized the importance of getting the name right.

“It is a snowball, not a snow cone. Everyone, we always have a good laugh when people ask that question,” she said.

You heard it here first: Many Marylanders will tell you it’s a snowball, not a snow cone.

With that settled, it’s time to tap into the fall flavors.

“Right now, we’re doing our fall flight, which everyone loves. You get to sample a little bit of a snowball pumpkin pie sundae, an apple cider slushie, which we’re doing new, which everyone’s loved,” Pohland said.
