RIDGELY, Md. – A man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for crimes related to the murder of a 65-year-old Ridgely man in Sept. 2025.

On Sept. 8, 23-year-old Tyler Scott Davis of Ridgely was sentenced for charges of second degree murder and abuse of a vulnerable adult, charges he plead guilty to earlier this year in June. For the murder charge, Davis was sentenced to 40 years of incarceration, with 20 years suspended. For the abuse charge, Davis was sentenced to 10 years of incarceration, with five years suspended. The sentences are to be served concurrently in the Maryland Department of Corrections.

Davis was convicted of killing 65-year-old Robert Joseph Daywalt in a physical altercation on Sept. 29, 2025.

“While no sentence can undo the loss of Mr. Daywalt, we hope this outcome provides his family with some measure of justice and closure,” said Sheriff Donald L. Baker.

On the morning of the incident, around 9:30 a.m., deputies from the Caroline County Sheriff’s Office, Caroline County Department of Emergency Services and the Ridgely Volunteer Fire Company responded to a residence located at 310 Maple Avenue for a 65-year-old male in cardiac arrest. Upon arrival, responders located the victim, identified as Daywalt, and observed injuries consistent with an assault.

During an ensuing investigation, it was determined there was a physical altercation that had occurred between Daywalt and Davis, who also resided in the home. As a result of the investigation Davis was taken into custody without incident and charged with second degree murder, manslaughter of an adult victim, first and second degree assault, reckless endangerment, physical injury to a vulnerable adult, and related abuse charges. He was remanded to the Caroline County Detention Center without bond.

On Oct. 1, 2025, preliminary findings from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled Daywalt’s death to be a homicide.
