GRASONVILLE, Md. – A Grasonville man has been sentenced to five years of active jailtime for a drive-by shooting that occurred in Oct. 2025.

According to the Queen Anne’s County Office of the Sheriff (QACOS), 29-year-old Zion Cook plead guilty to first degree assault and reckless endangerment on Sept. 18, and was subsequently sentenced to 25 years in prison, with all but five years suspended. Following his incarceration, Cook will serve five years of probation. Authorities say the active incarceration portion of the sentence was within the Maryland Sentencing Guidelines recommendation for the felony assault.

“This case is a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of gun violence and the danger created when individuals choose to resolve disputes with firearms,” said Sheriff Gary Hofmann. “We are grateful that the victims survived this incident, and we remain committed to pursuing justice and holding violent offenders accountable in Queen Anne’s County.”

On Oct. 30, 2025, deputies responded to the University of Maryland Shore Emergency Center in Queenstown, for a victim with injuries sustained in a drive-by shooting. Investigators determined that two victims were inside their vehicle at Ewing Pond Park in Grasonville, when another vehicle pulled alongside them and began shooting. The second victim was transported to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore for a non-life-threatening injury sustained in the shooting.

Through the course of the investigation, detectives identified the shooter as Cook and learned he was related to one of the victims. In April, Cook was located by the Maryland State Police State Apprehension Team and placed under arrest.
