Dorchester Health Dept. to Host Maryland Walks Day in Cambridge
(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – Communities across the state of Maryland are getting ready to lace up their sneakers this Wednesday for Maryland Walks Day.
Local health departments are encouraging people to come together and walk through their communities .The goal is reaching one million steps across the state in the month of October.
And in the City of Cambridge, the Dorchester County Health Department is working with local businesses to get people walking downtown.
“But we’re also trying to involve the businesses downtown and Cambridge and get, the walkers in the doors at the businesses. So we went door to door yesterday and try to get the businesses to offer discounts.. And we did get some takers…” says Dorchester County Health Department Advisor, Robin Stanley.
Walking is the state of Maryland’s official exercise, and the state wants to celebrate all the health and environmental benefits that come with getting your steps in.
“It doesn’t have to be in full segments. You can do ten minutes of parking a little bit further away from the door at Walmart and getting a few extra steps in that can help lower your blood pressure. Help with type two diabetes, reduce the risk of stroke. And it actually has mental health benefits, too,” says the Heath Department’s Shannon Proffitt.
Maryland Walks events will be held at 530 Race St, 432 Race St. and 112 Commerce St. at 1 P.M. Wednesday.
