Fall Fun and Fresh Produce at Wright’s Market in Mardela Springs
Pumpkins, produce and pies are in full swing at Wright’s Market, the family-run landmark along Route 50 in Mardela Springs. You can’t miss the iconic windmill out front.
The market began from the back of a pickup truck and is now a 13,000-square-foot destination. Five generations of the Wright family have worked the land. One family member says his grandfather bought the farm in 1939 and “really started the produce market.”
The Wrights grow much of what’s on the shelves, including sweet corn, watermelons, cantaloupes, tomatoes and peppers. There are also U-pick strawberries. Sweet potatoes are a staple, and they show up in ice cream, pies and cornbread.
When autumn arrives, the market goes all in on pumpkins, gourds and mums. It’s about more than shopping, too. A weekly theme festival runs from late September through October, with:
- A goat area
- The Fun Zone, with a pumpkin pad, zip lines and a spider rope
- A spooky corn maze
More than 2,000 students visit on field trips each season. The family sees those visits as a chance to teach people about the importance of farming.
As one of the Wrights puts it, the whole family is what makes it go, and the next generation is ready to carry it on.
Wright’s Market has a lot of fall fun planned, visit their website for more info!
