UPDATE: ‘Secure’ Status at Multiple Wicomico Schools Lifted

Wicomico County Public Schools

UPDATE: The Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) says the secure status has been lifted at all four Wicomico schools.

At 1:51 p.m., WCSO posted an update saying that schools are returning to normal operating parameters. No further details have been released at this time.

WICOMICO COUNTY, Md. – The Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) says multiple public schools in the county have been placed in a “secure” status.

At 1:00 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 5, authorities said Wicomico High School, Wicomico Middle School, East Salisbury Elementary School, and Choices Academy were following the Standard Response Protocol K-12. A “secure” status means that all students and school personnel are brought inside the secured building, all exterior access points are locked, and no outside activities are permitted. Normal classroom activities continue without interruption.

The status comes two weeks after threats were made against elementary schools in the county. However, WCSO said the status was being invoked as a precautionary measure in response to “an incident that occurred within the City of Salisbury.”

“There is no indication of an active threat to these schools at this time and these actions are being taken out of an abundance of caution,” the agency said in a message posted to social media. “The incident is not directly related to or occurring within Wicomico County Public Schools.”

Authorities say more information will be released as it becomes available.
