Wicomico County Executive Julie Giordano Holds Annual Legislative Breakfast

Salisbury, Md. — County, state, and regional leaders gathered in Salisbury Friday for the annual Wicomico County legislative breakfast, where attendees heard discussions on proposed legislation, the importance of local autonomy, public safety, education and municipal updates.

Community stakeholders; which included the Wicomico County Council, police departments, the state’s attorney, higher education leaders and representatives from Wicomico County Schools — shared their experiences with legislators.

Wicomico County Executive Julie Giordano said having the annual legislative breakfasts is a way for state legislators to hear directly from people on the local level and get the information needed to go into the upcoming legislative session.

“Having that collaborative compensation is really super important. Now I feel that they are more prepared to go to Annapolis and be able to fight for the things that we need here on the shore,” Giordano said.

Giordano says its opportunity for local community stakeholders to share their concerns with legislators in Annapolis before the next session. And it gives the public a firsthand look at the conversations between leaders.

“People need to know what the legislative priorities are. And, you know, what our stakeholders are saying to the delegation and what the delegation is going to go back with. And a lot of times our public might not get to see these guys. They go to a lot of public events, but it does give them an opportunity to chat as well,” Giordano said.

Giordano added that having the breakfast at this time of year gives legislators flexibility to plan and learn more before the new session starts in January.

“If they want to file any early bills, they can. But it is before the session. So, the session starts in January, and it gives them a lot of time and if there’s follow up that they need to do that, we’re giving them the time to do that,” Giordano said. “From now until December they will be continuing these discussions. A lot of these things were introduced for the first time here, but they will continue those conversations all the way leading up to this session in January.”
