Worcester County Commissioners Request Property Transfer of Welcome Center Off Route-13

POCOMOKE CITY, Md. – The welcome center is one of the first things motorists see when crossing over the Maryland state line on Route 13 near Pocomoke City. On September 1st, Worcester County Commissioners sent an inquiry to the Maryland Department of Transportation about acquiring the welcome center south of Pocomoke, in order to refurbish the property.

Weston Young, the Chief Administrative Officer for the Worcester County Commissioners, explained why these renovations are needed.

“So there’s two rest areas there now.” Said Young.  “There’s one on the other side of the road in Virginia, and I think if people had a choice right now, they’d go there because it’s been invested in. And that’s what we’re trying to do.”

The state currently owns the building, but the county operates the indoor information center, which recently underwent refurbishments to better showcase tourist attractions in Worcester County. The director of the office of tourism and economic development, Melanie Pursel, believes renovations on the exterior, will better help promote the county.

“We tried to make sure that we have information about the entire region for people coming through, and we’re hoping that if people come through on their way up north, that maybe they’ll come back and visit us by seeing what we have to offer in Worcester County.” Said Pursel.
