UMES To Receive $2.1 Million in Additional Federal Funding

Princess Anne, Md. — Representative Andy Harris (R-1) announced Wednesday that the University of Maryland Eastern Shore will receive $2.1 million in federal funding through the Supplemental HBCU Mandatory Grants program. 

Rep. Harris released a statement announcing the funding.

“UMES has a long history of educating students on the Eastern Shore and preparing graduates for careers in Maryland and across the country. This $2.1 million in funding will strengthen academic programs and provide additional resources for students,” Harris wrote. 

University officials said the funding is important for the university to continue providing for students and staff.

“This always is very important to us because not only does it help us with our infrastructure needs, but it helps us with what we do with our students, whether it’s the academic programing, whether it’s student success, putting in money into advising or into tutoring. All of those things make a difference. And so, any additional amount of money that we get is always dearly needed,” said UMES President Dr. Heidi Anderson.

Anderson said the funding can go towards university priorities. She mentioned programs like the school’s new veterinary medicine school that’s seeking accreditation and their four-year sequential arts program.

“Those kind of programs still need funding added, whether the funding is for equipment, or for faculty or for staff. Those are the things that would be helpful,” Anderson said.”

She added that the funding is important in support for students and providing them with quality programs to help set up their futures.

“Our students, we want to make sure that we not only they apply here and we keep them here, but we help them graduate and we help them move on to careers that they’re going to be successful in. So funding helps us do those particular things,” Anderson said.
