September 2026 recognized as Veterans Suicide Prevention Month

Millsboro, Del. – For the first time, the first state is observing Veterans Suicide Prevention month this September.

Back in June, Delaware’s Senate introduced Senate Concurrent Resolution 222. The bipartisan resolution, sponsored by Sen. Brian Pettyjohn (R-District 19) recognizes September 2026 as “Veterans Suicide Prevention Month.”

Legislators say the transition from being in the active military to civilian life can bring unique challenges including injuries, trauma, mental and behavioral health struggles and more.

“We’ve had several veterans over the last year in Delaware that have committed suicide,” Pettyjohn told WMDT. “So, we want to make sure that veterans that are having issues know where resources are, where they can seek help and get help before it gets to the point where they want to take their own lives.”
