Nause-Waiwash Band of Indians Holding Native American Festival

(VIENNA, Md) – A local Native American Tribe is preparing for one of their biggest traditions in Dorchester County this weekend.

The Nasue-Waiwash Band of Indians is hosting their 34th annual Native American Festival in Vienna this weekend at the baseball field’s underneath Vienna’s water tower.
But what most may not know is the land has a major significance to the tribe.

“Beyond the ball field where we are is our traditional feast and grounds. This is sacred land. This is where we were. So this is very, very special to us for a lot of reasons,” says Casey Hughes, a member of the Nause-Waiwash.

Demonstrators will be showcasing everything from historical dances to the history of the tribe.
And people are coming from far and wide to celebrate.

Casey tells WMDT, “We pride ourselves on not being competition based and being friendly for the young ones to come learn and come dance. We have friends coming from North Carolina, New York, Jersey from all over the place to come visit and dance and have a good time.”

Festivities will take place, Saturday, September 19th at 214 Middle Street in Vienna, starting at 10 A.M.
