“King of the Wind” Festival Fills Ocean City Sky With Colorful Kites for 48th Year

OCEAN CITY, Md. – The “King of the Wind” festival returned to fill the Ocean City sky along the downtown boardwalk for the 48th annual meetup, which started on Thursday, Sept. 17th.

Jay Knerr is the owner of the Kite Loft, the organizers of the event, and explained why “King of the Wind” has brought people back to Ocean City, for almost half a century.

“You know, people come from all over to attend this event because they love being on the beach in Ocean City.” Said Knerr. “They always have good winds. And of course, you get a day like this. It’s just pure magic.”

The festival gives hobbyists, like Jeff King, a chance to share their love for the activity while meeting like-minded kiters. But for the passionate polyester pilots, it’s more than just showing off their collection.

“Part of our payoff just for doing it, is not only do we enjoy it, but we enjoy putting smiles on people’s faces and letting other folks enjoy it as well.” Said King.

The event features of a variety of fan favorite kites, such as King’s beloved orange cuddle-fish which towers over the beach.

“He’s named Norbert.” Said King. “It’s kind of a kiter superstition in some quarters that you have to name the big kites. So they fly well.”

The event runs from Sept. 17th-20th, from 9am until 5pm. According to organizer Jay Knerr, this is just the beginning of a magical weekend.

“So picture what you’re seeing here and then multiply it by two or three.” Said Knerr.
