“Kids in Safety Seats” Promotes Safe Back to School Transportation

BERLIN, Md. – The back to school transition is underway and the Maryland Department of Health is working to ensure parents and guardians are properly installing car seats.

The department’s “Kids in Safety Seats” initiative made a stop at the Berlin Fire Company, with the help of Worcester County Sheriffs Office, on Tuesday from 3-6pm.

Certified child passenger safety technicians, such as program coordinator Tracy Whitman, completed free safety inspections to ensure proper installation and gave safety advice for travel.

“So we do know that based on previous car seat inspection data, we run about a 72% misuse right here in Maryland.” Said Whitman. “And in order for car seats or booster seats to be the most effective, we want to make sure they’re 100% right. With back to school safety, all the kids are back on the road right now.”

The program will continue their initiative with stops at the Salisbury City Fire Department, Station 2, on October 6th, and Princess Anne Fire Department on November 7th.
