Easton Asks SHA For Speed Cameras on Route 50

(EASTON, Md) – The town of Easton has reached out to the Maryland State Highway Administration with the goal of installing cameras along Route 50 here in town. It’s their goal to try and curb speeding on one of the busiest highways on the Eastern Shore.

The Easton Police Department says the need for cameras along Route 50 has increased since a portion of route 50 in the town limits was expanded to three lanes.

“…and it’s difficult to position a police car in an area where he can accurately monitor the speed with a speed device, and then to safely stop and pull the vehicle over. So it is a safety issue,” says Easton Deputy Police Chief, Captian Gregory Wright.

That’s why the town has reached out to the State Highway Administration to install cameras on Route 50 in town.

Easton Mayor, Megan Cook tells WMDT, “So the state now has a new designation called a vulnerable roadway that takes effect in October. We’ve have long complained to the state, about speeding and accidents, along our stretch of route 50.”

The cameras would operate similarly to others the town has used in the past…

Captain Wright tells us, “We’ve seen them work in construction sites very well. And we’ve seen them work with success in school zones. So this is another another area where this is a tool that we could use.”

And the town hopes to see the timeline for speed cameras take shape soon.

“We’re waiting. We sent back another request, another communication with him last week for some additional detail. They’re supposed to get back to us this week. Hopefully today maybe.”
