Delaware’s Surfrider Foundation keeping the beaches clean

LEWES, Del. – After a busy summer season, the Delaware Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation held a beach cleaning event over the weekend.

The treasurer, Micah Sklut, explains what the group is all about. “This is a local chapter, and we are all volunteers, so no one is getting paid, but we’re just coming out here because we care.”

The local chapter does plenty of things to serve the community. From cleaning the beaches to engaging in climate change meetings. The powerful activist network has allowed them to pick up after the millions of visitors that come to the state’s popular resort towns.

Sklut said the group has its hands in many areas. “Surfriders, our mission is to protect the oceans, beaches, and waters. And we do a number of things in the community, and one of them we do is organize beach cleanups.”

The group has another beach cleanup set for October 18th at Deauville Beach. Plastic reduction, ocean protection, climate issues, and clean water are all efforts that the group prioritizes.

This past weekend, around 35 volunteers came out in the early morning to keep the beach in top-notch condition.

Delaware is known around the country, in having pristine beaches. Sklut tells WMDT, groups like the Surfrider Foundation are vital.

“We do have pretty nice beaches here in Delaware, and we want to keep it that way. Especially after the summer season, after the tourists leave, we tend to see bottle caps, cigarette buds, and cans all over the beach.”

The Foundation plans to continue its mission of protecting the shoreline. There are several events scheduled throughout the First State.
