Charlie Paparella Sees a Film at the Mar-Va Theater
POCOMOKE CITY, Md. – In this week’s edition of Back on the Road with Charlie Paparella, brought to you by Furniture & More Gone Coastal, Charlie went to see a film at the historic Mar-Va Theater in Pocomoke City.
“It was wonderful to see families lining up to pay the five dollar ticket price… and lining up for popcorn and treats for the movie,” Charlie observed when he went to see a screening of Spider-Man. “And it was a wonderful thing to see, the old theater in beautiful condition, filled with people, just months away from the theater’s 100th birthday.”
Charlie most admires the community effort that has supported the upkeep of the historic theater. Countless fundraisers and grassroots organizing paved the way for preserving the Mar-Va Theater, and in turn, the space has helped to revive the downtown business district.
Several businesses neighboring the theater have stood the test of time as well, like Lusby’s True Value Hardware, which has been in business for more than 50 years. Other storefronts are now filled with all kinds of startups; from a new law office to a stained glass and photography shop, to a Chinese restaurant and craft brewery. Charlie called it “custom made for a great town with a wonderful theater.”
Lastly, Charlie and WMDT share our condolences to the people of Pocomoke City on the loss of “Ma Pearl” Layton, who passed last week. An active supporter of the Marva Theater renovation, she was 104 years old.
