Athletes Travelling From All Over to Compete in Ironman Maryland

(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – More than 1600 athletes, are in Cambridge to take part in the annual Ironman, where they will swim, bike and run across Dorchester County. And just a few of those 1600 people tell WMDT, what’s going through their mind as they get set to line up at the starting gate.

People from as close as Annapolis, To as far as across the Atlantic Ocean, have descended on Cambridge for the annual Ironman.

And we asked a few people why they wanted to take part in this one.

Catherine Keve from Dillon, Colorado says, “But my why is just, it’s fun. Simply put, it’s just fun. It helps motivate me. Training and working out and all of that.”

“The course is, is very flat. So that was one of the big appealing part of it. I’ve also done a couple of races in the US I’ve really enjoyed…” says Lito Michaelidou, who travelled from London.

While Christopher Calderon of Seattle, Washington says, “It gives me joy. It makes me happy. And I’ve never been on the East Coast to do an Ironman. Everything I’ve ever been on the West Coast. So I just wanted to try it out.”

And in taking part in competition spanning the county, we asked what part these people are looking forward to.

“I’m a good biker, a super runner. And so I’ve been looking at those temperature checks. But look, we swam this morning. I’m. It’s got to be the same for everyone. So I’m looking forward to it,” says Steven Moody, a competitor from Dublin, Ireland.

Matthew Bateman from Annapolis tells WMDT he’s excited in…”Getting to see the area and go see the Blackwater Reserve, it’s going to be beautiful. And, you know, I think most people do this to feel the energy of the people.”

Not to mention, we asked if they’re excited or nervous for Saturday.

Moody tells us he’s, “Nervous and excited. It never changes if it’s your first day or 14th, as in, like, I won’t sleep a wink tonight.”

“Listen, I could not be more excited. It’s a great day. And it’s a even better day to become an Ironman. Let’s go,” says Matt Jenco from Phoenixville, Pennsylvania.
