UPDATE: One Airlifted After Crash Involving Cambridge Police Cruiser

CAMBRIDGE, Md. – One person was airlifted following a serious crash involving a Cambridge Police cruiser on Wednesday afternoon.
In a statement to WMDT, the Cambridge Police Department (CPD) says the crash occurred around 1:15 p.m. while officers from their department and the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office were responding to an officer who called for assistance. Maryland State Police (MSP) responded to the crash shortly before 2:00 p.m.
In a statement to WMDT, MSP said their preliminary investigation revealed that a marked CPD Ford Explorer was traveling in the intersection of Maryland Route 343 ad Academy Street when, for unknown reasons, struck a Chevrolet Impala, subsequently causing the police car to travel off the roadway and strike a building. The Chevrolet also traveled off the roadway and struck a fence.

Just before 3:30 p.m., volunteer firefighters with the Rescue Fire Company were dispatched to the motor vehicle collision with entrapment. Crews successfully completed the extrication of the trapped patient before transferring care to emergency medical services.
The officer in the cruiser was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. The driver of the Chevrolet was flown to Shock Trauma in Baltimore.
MSP will be handling the crash investigation at the request of CPD.
