The Brightside: Turning Dreams Into Beach Homes

DELAWARE — In the newest edition of the Brightside, WMDT spoke with Marnie Oursler, a home builder who was named Delaware’s Designer of the Year for the second consecutive year. Sponsored by Choptank Electric Cooperative.

Marnie Oursler, founder of Marnie Custom Homes, has built more than beautiful houses — she’s built a career around turning dreams into homes.Oursler said, “I got into this pretty naturally. My father is a builder. My grandfather was a builder. My great-grandfather was a builder and so on down the line. I’m a fifth-generation home builder.”

Growing up around the industry, Oursler was constantly on job sites with her dad, where she got to experience nearly every part of the job firsthand.

“I was also, you know, doing concrete work, you know, moving materials, scooping at houses, picking up trash,” Oursler said.

Her love for building beach homes along Delaware’s shore is evident, but she also has another helper who makes sure the job gets done.

“My daughter comes to work with me, you know, all the time in the summer. And she loves it. She loves being out on job sites, and she’s only three and a half years old. So, it’s neat to see,” Oursler said.

Family and hard work are the building blocks of her business — but creating these dream homes takes a team.

Oursler said, “We do all the cabinetry in-house. We do all the interior design, reflective ceiling plans, built-ins, bunk beds, all of that’s in-house.”

To bring each client’s vision to life, the team uses 3D imaging to show what their dream beach house could look like, both inside and out.

And when it comes to creating a true Marnie Oursler beach home, there are a few signature details that make all the difference.

Oursler said, “We have to have beach prep rooms. I mean, there has to be certain places that are specific to the beach for the sand to go and then for all of the people to go.”

For Oursler, fulfilling someone’s dream of owning a beach home takes more than just craftsmanship. She says it takes a strong support system behind her.

“I’m successful because I have a lot of support around me. So, my husband, my parents, my siblings and my team and my clients. So, all of that lifts me up,” Oursler said.

For Oursler, building homes isn’t just a family business — it’s a family legacy, one she’s already beginning to pass on to the next generation.
