Parents React To Wicomico High And Middle School Clear Book Bag Policy

WICOMICO COUNTY, Md. — As the school year steadily approaches, Wicomico high and Wicomico middle school families are preparing for the clear book bag pilot initiative. Parents spoke about their thoughts around the program.

As students gear up for the start of the school year, they are picking out their notebooks, pencils, and backpacks. Starting this school year, two schools in Wicomico County have a new book bag policy they must follow in part of a clear bag pilot initiative.

Wicomico County Public School parent, Tiffany Moore said, “I agree with this safety. I agree with the concept. I do not agree with the rollout.”

Owner of Salisbury Before and After School Lab, Michael Duncan said, “I think that number one, in our county, our child safety should be priority over anything.”

Wicomico County Public School parent, Eric Brewington said, “I don’t necessarily have a problem with it. I think it’s actually beneficial for school safety.”

In recent years, community members and parents have voiced safety concerns in all Wicomico County’s High Schools. the county has decided to test out the program in Wicomico Middle and Wicomico High School,

Duncan said, “We should be able to see what’s in children’s book bags as are being around other children. We don’t want anything in there that could threaten the lives of other children.”

One parent welcomes the safety measures but isn’t impressed with the deployment of the program.

Moore said, “I feel that they should have done all the schools having clear backpacks because you now you’ve set aside two schools and it’s going to make them feel isolated.”

While another parent, doesn’t mind the fact that the county is testing two of the public schools.

Brewington said, “I’m fine with my kids being a test guinea pig for this one because it’s not something that’s that like restrictive of them, so I don’t I don’t have a problem with it.”
