“Human Composting” Company Plans Conservation Site in Worcester County

SNOW HILL, Md. – The Worcester County Board of Zoning Appeals approved a plot of land where native trees will be grown in soil made from human remains. The nature of the project has some Worcester County residents divided.

The company, Earth Funeral, specializes in ‘human composting,” and bought this 15 acre plot in a rural area outside of Snow Hill. The company aims to build a conservation site, while in-turn, re-purposing organic waste.

Hugh Cropper is the attorney representing Earth Funeral, and explains the process.

“It’s called natural organic reduction, which is essentially taking human decedents and turning them into soil top soil compost.” Said Cropper. “The Eastern Shore is a good place to have that.”

Although the company speaks highly of the environmental benefits, the plan has received some push-back from residents, including Ted Elder, The President of the Worcester County Board of Commissioners.

“They’re buying up farmland that, was productive farmland that we’ve been struggling and working real hard to try to keep.” Said Elder.

The major question that Elder wants answered, is why on the Eastern Shore?

“Why the company, located in Howard County, would choose to, bring their dumping all the way to Worcester County?” Said Elder. “It’s as far away from Howard County as you can get. And still be in Maryland.”

The Board of Zoning Appeals approved the purchase of the plot, 4-2. As of right now, the project will continue to move forward.
