East New Market Leadership Holds First Emergency Preparedness Meeting

“I sat there and I thought, you know, as mayor, do I know what to do in case there’s an emergency or where do we go? And the answer is no. I had no idea. So I decided the next day I needed to learn. And we need to let the town residents learn…” says Mayor Gary Lucks.

So in partnership with Dorchester County leadership, and the county’s Emergency Management Agency, the town is creating an Emergency Preparedness Plan.

And informing the public about what’s already in place from the county.

Dorchester County EMA Director, James Windsor tells WMDT, “So building out response is just a lot of communication and coordination with community partners. As well as trying to address some of those concerns, such as identifying storm shelters and stuff was a big issue. So trying to make sure we can identify those and then reach back out to town officials…”

The goal in town is to have annual Emergency Preparedness meetings.

Especially as some still have plenty of questions which the town and county will try to answer following this first meeting.

“There were people that live in the (Heritage) park that are disabled that need help and stuff, you know, some place to take them, quickly…” says nearby resident, Carllyn Cenzer.

Dorchester County leadership says they will be working over the next few weeks to help answer questions from Tuesday night’s meeting.
