August Marks National Immunization Month

Immun Month

DELMARVA–August is National Immunization Awareness Month, an annual observance highlighting the importance of vaccinations for people of all ages.

Health Officials use the month to enourage families and individuals to review their immunization records and talk with their health care providers about which vaccines they may need.

Vaccines are designed to help protect people from serious and potentially life-threatening diseases.

Delaware Surgeon General Dr. Neil Hockstein said staying up to date on recommended vaccines is an important way to protect both individuals and the community.

“Vaccinations do two things. It both protects us, but it also protects our neighbors who are vulnerable,” Hockstein said. “I think that, in general people are good and we want to protect our neighbors. Most important is understanding that that these are devastating diseases that are preventable.”

Hockstein also encouraged people who may have questions or concerns about vaccines to speak with their doctor or health care provider.

“Vaccines are safe and effective and one of the best tools that we’ve had over the course of centuries to protect ourselves,” Hockstein said.

National Immunization Month serves as a reminder that staying informed about vaccines is an important part of maintaining personal and community health– not just during August, but throughout the year.
