(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – While we’ve gotten a small break from the intense heat that gripped our area for the holiday weekend, a local group is partnering with the Dorchester County Health Department to once again get fans and air conditioners to people in need so that they don’t have to suffer from any heat related illnesses.

We met Tavonya Chester with the Dorchester County Health Department last year when she and her Zeta Phi Beta Sorority sisters launched the air conditioner drive.

The members of the Iota Chi Zeta Chapter say last year’s drive was a difference maker to so many people.

Tavonya tells WMDT, “…Really helped a lot of people out last year. But we weren’t able to help everybody. So there were still some people that we were unable to help because we ran out of fans and air conditioners. So this year, we’re hoping to reach those people…”

Of those 40 people, Tavonya says many were dealing with health problems…

Something one of her sorority sisters knows all too well with her young daughter, and that why they are lending a hand in the community.

After last year’s successful drive, this year the sorority is looking to make sure these are going to the people most in need the next time the temperature spikes into the triple digits.

“The only way that we can improve that total is that we get assistance from the community. If the community would find it in their hearts to donate a fan and air conditioner to this job and know that it’s going to help somebody that’s truly in need and maybe even save someone’s life,” says Tavonya.

The sorority will be accepting new air conditioners, fans, or cash donations. Anyone interested in donating can drop off their donation at the Dorchester County Health Department at 627 Race Street in Cambridge.
