Two 15-Year-Olds Arrested for Vehicle Theft Following Pursuit through Cambridge

CAMBRIDGE, Md. – The Cambridge Police Department has arrested two 15-year-old juveniles in connection with vehicle theft following a police pursuit last week.

At 4:39 am on Jul. 24, officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 700 block of Foxtail Drive after receiving information that the individuals inside the car had allegedly been attempting to break into vehicles in the area. The vehicle refused to stop and began driving recklessly at a high rate of speed. Nearby back up units assisted in the subsequent pursuit, at which time an officer was able to deploy stop sticks at Glasgow Street and Leonard’s Lane. Despite driving over the stop sticks, police say the driver of the vehicle refused to stop and continued throughout many city streets with tires flattened.

Police say the pursuit continued into the Algonquin neighborhood where the vehicle went into a yard on Manito Drive. As an officer stopped at the entrance of the driveway and exited his patrol vehicle, the car turned around and began driving at the officer. The officer was able to quickly move out of the way to avoid being struck, and the suspect then rammed his police cruiser. At this point, due to the damage sustained by the pursued vehicle, it came to a stop, at which time both suspects inside the vehicle were placed under arrest without further incident.

Police later discovered the vehicle, a 2013 Hyundai, was found to be stolen out of Fruitland.

The teenage driver was charged with several charges including first degree assault, reckless endangerment, motor vehicle theft, and related criminal and traffic offenses. He was later held by Juvenile Services at the Lower Eastern Shore Children’s Center.

The juvenile passenger was also charged with motor vehicle theft, along with other related criminal charges. He was later released to a parent/guardian.
