Somerset County Fairgrounds open July 24 for Somerset County Fair

Salisbury, Md. – The Somerset County Fair continues its 83-year tradition with the Somerset County Fair, welcoming vendors and local agricultural enterprises to “strengthen community relationships and partnerships,” according to officials.

The fair is meant to increase the public’s awareness about local agriculture and strengthen community bonds. In addition to all the traditional favorites — this year’s fair will also feature a parade in celebration of the country’s 250th anniversary of independence. Officials said the fair is one of the few on Maryland’s Lower Shore that has free admission and is accessible for small children and the elderly.

Somerset County Fair Board President Ronnie Haymaker said the fair is a part of nostalgic memories for many families as parents bring their children to an event they had themselves enjoyed as children. He said it was also an opportunity for community members to learn about the agricultural practices and the history behind them.

“It’s tradition and a chance to show your kids how people used to preserve food and how agriculture, you know, simply has everything from New modern farm equipment, air tools, some antique equipment demonstrations, so people can see how how their grandparents used to have to do it,” he said. “You know, it just gives people a chance to actually meet the people that produce their food and fiber and fuel and and everything that they use in life and, you know, they can ask those questions.”

One of the most important takeaways, he said, however is connecting in person with neighbors and allowing a space for children to be off screens and play outside.

“It’s just about human interaction,” Haymaker said.
