Protecting Your Lungs this Fourth of July

DELMARVA – While fireworks are a staple for Independence Day celebrations, the American Lung Association (ALA) is warning residents of possible impacts from inhaling firework smoke.

When fireworks explode, they release irritating gases and harmful metals, including carbon monoxide, aluminum and cadmium, into the air. Firework smoke also contains tiny particles, known as particulate matter, which can irritate the lungs, trigger asthma attacks and cause other respiratory symptoms. Breathing in firework smoke is unhealthy for everyone, but children, older adults, those who are pregnant, and individuals with lung or heart disease are especially vulnerable.

To help residents protect their health and stay safe, ALA is offering the following guidance:

  • Stay upwind of any firework demonstrations
  • Stay indoors during especially smokey conditions
  • Monitor local air quality reports prior to and following firework displays
  • Keep an eye on pre-existing conditions that could be exacerbated by smoke inhalation

If you have questions about lung health and how to safely celebrate this holiday, you can call ALA’s free Lung HelpLine at 1-800-LUNGUSA.
