Maryland Rolls Out New “Chip and Tap” EBT Cards

(MARYLAND) – A major change is rolling out across Maryland for EBT customers.

Governor Wes Moore’s office announced over the weekend the rollout of over 500 thousand new EBT cards for those who qualify in Maryland.

The main difference for these new cards being that they have the NFC Chip that many of us use in our own credit and debit cards. We caught up with the Maryland Department of Human Services about the need for the upgrade and how it’s preventing fraud.

“This technology, which, Mastercard visa, implemented years ago, and they saw an 80%, drop in, fraud as a result. And so this will prevent that skimming and ensure, additional, protections,” says Department of Human Services Deputy Secretary, Gloria Burnett.

Maryland is only the fourth state in the United States to implement “Chip and Tap” EBT cards.
