Friday Pie Day Competition Crowns Champion At Delaware State Fair

HARRINGTON, De. – It’s the sweetest day at the Delaware State Fair, July 31st is Friday Pie Day, the annual pie competition.

There were 14 entries this year, that were all trying to meet the high standards of the judges taste buds. 

Trina Stump is the assistant superintendent of the culinary department at the fair, and assisted in the pie judging.

“We have so many amazing pies that we usually have a judge off between about, 3 to 7 pies that are so close to the top. It’s really hard.” Said Stump.  “It makes the judges job hard. Even though you think the judges job is amazingly easy.” 

This year’s winning delicacy was a toasted coconut pecan praline cream pie — and the baker who made the show stopping desert, Lorrie Morgan, shared her winning strategy with WMDT. 

“It’s just trying new things and thinking about what the judges might like.” Said Morgan. “What would be a crowd favorite? It has to be flavors that are, pleasing, but also unique at the same time.”

The winner went home with $100 in cash, and of course, bragging rights.
