Charlie Paparella Spends Time with his Great-Grandson
SALISBURY, Md. – In this week’s edition of Back on the Road with Charlie Paparella, brought to you by Furniture & More Gone Coastal, Charlie visits some of his family members, including his great-grandson, Jaxon.
Charlie says Jaxon is excellent at riding a bicycle, a skill he didn’t teach the child himself.
“He learned that important skill from another grandfather, my good friend Pat Beatty, one of Jaxon’s several grandfathers who are more present in his daily life,” Charlie says.
Pat says in the beginning, teaching Jaxon to ride included walking his bike alongside the young boy, and letting him ride down a grassy incline at a nearby graveyard.
“I’d take him to the top of that incline, with his feet on the ground and his hand on the brake, and I said: ‘Steer straight ahead. Don’t look left, don’t look right, look straight ahead and go!’ Pat tells Charlie. “And gravity carries him down, and he gets his balance.”
But one time, Pat says Jaxon kept going! Instead of letting his attention wander left and right, he just looked straight and he nailed it, pedaling all the way down the path.
Charlie says it’s all proof of the saying, “It takes a village to raise a child.”
