Chamber Chat: MD Special Legislative Session

SALISBURY, Md. – In this week’s Chamber Chat, WMDT’s John Trout and Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce President Bill Chambers discuss the Maryland General Assembly’s Special Legislative Session, slated to take place from Monday, Aug. 3 through Wednesday, Aug. 5.

Bill tells WMDT that there are two major issues on the agenda, including a proposal for congressional redistricting and a possible process for filling vacancies through special elections. The timing is being driven by a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that’s affected the legal framework surrounding congressional maps.

In order to pass revised congressional maps, it would have to pass with a three-fifths majority in both the House of Delegates and Maryland Senate. Yet, even with an affirmative vote, Maryland voters would get the final say on the November ballot.

“Republican lawmakers have argued the session should also address rising energy prices and Maryland’s growing cost of living,” Bill says. “But legislative leaders have indicated they’ll keep this session narrowly focused on the redistricting and election issues.”

Bill says this special session could have major impacts for Maryland’s business community, but it’s ultimately dependent on what new representation brings.

“Whether that translates into changes in federal policy, business regulations, or economic priorities is impossible to predict today,” Bill concludes. “For now, businesses should simply watch the process because the long-term political makeup of Maryland’s congressional delegation could influence future decisions affecting the state’s economy.”
