Cambridge Breaks Ground on Leonard’s Lane Park

(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – The City of Cambridge is beginning work on a major project with the National Park Service and their Chesapeake Gateways program.

Cambridge Mayor, Lajan Cephas says the park has been in the works for years, even before she took office as Mayor, and how sorely needed it is.

She tells WMDT, “When I was the commission president for the city of Cambridge. I heard so much of a need from the residents in this community who talked about the lack of activities and the lack of space where our younger people could go and just have some fun to just express themselves.”

The new park will serve as part of the Chesapeake Gateways program with the National Park Service; A program focused on connecting residents to the Chesapeake bay water shed and its many gifts.

“So we did an investment, early on in the project through a cooperative agreement that provided just over $100,000 for the design and planning for the park…that was a little over, I believe, 300,000 for, the first few phases of the park design,” says Wendy O’Sullivan, a Superintendent with the Chesapeake Gateways.

The first phase will include the construction of two basketball courts, and a place to remember the voices the community has lost.

“So there’s going to be a portion here at the park, a memorial for them, a place where of grieving, of healing, just as they reflect on the loss….it’s going to be an, an organic, community garden, which is going to be in the far back of the corner. And we hope to have some fruit bearing trees, along with that as well,” says Mayor Cephas.

Cambridge leadership says they hope to have the first phase of Leonard’s Lane Park completed by December of this year.
