Beach To Bay Heritage Area Receives Grant to Expand Outdoor Recreation Access

BERLIN, Md. – Beach to Bay Heritage Area received a new grant to expand accessibility to outdoor recreation in Worcester County.

The funding comes from the reinvestment and repair act grant, from the Worcester County Local Management Board. Beach to Bay Heritage Area will use this grant to expand access to outdoor recreation for at-risk and low income residents in the Berlin area. Some examples of the accessibility improvements include multi-lingual brochures, trailhead signage, and educational tours.

Andre Nieto Jaime is the director of communications for Beach to Bay Heritage Area, and emphasizes the importance of inclusion in recreation.

“This is fits into our mission of ensuring that everyone who lives here on the Eastern Shore kind of feels at home here, and they can access and get in touch with the natural landscape that really has shaped our heritage and history here on the shore.” Said Jaime.

Beach to Bay Heritage Area explains the initiative wants to “reduce barriers to participation while promoting healthier lifestyles, improved mental well-being, and stronger connections to the region’s natural resources.”

Maryland Coastal Bays is also partnering with the program to offer guided boating tours. In a statement to WMDT, they spoke on the initiative, saying “by connecting local systems to an individual’s lived experience, we hope to increase curiosity and investment in community heritage and environmental well being.”
