Game On! Returns to Salisbury Parks
SALISBURY, Md. – The summer-long program Game On! returned to Salisbury parks with a kickoff event on Tuesday.
Doverdale and Lake Street Park will host the program Monday-Friday from 9am-1pm from now until Aug. 14th.
Rachel Manning, the Community Relations Manager for the City of Salisbury, explained the goal of this slate of community activities.
“The reason why we started this Game On! program here [Doverdale Park] and at Lake Street Playground is to really just get the kids outside” Said Manning. “You know, it’s summer. We want them to be outside enjoying the parks, making new friends. Don’t sit inside all summer long, get out there, be active, exercise and just have a good time.”
Todays event included a waterslide, water guns, and a wide selection of books. Each day is accompanied with a free meal, provided by Wicomico Public Schools.
Muir Boda is the Director of Housing and Community Development for the City of Salisbury, and emphasized the need for programs like this to help keep children healthy and active.
“I think it just gives the opportunity for kids to come out and be kids in an environment where they can just play basketball, they can play soccer.” Said Boda. “We have snow cones. Every week we do a water feature. So it gives the opportunity for kids to just be kids.”
The program is part of a larger initiative pushed by the city of Salisbury.
“It was pushed by council women, council president, April Jackson.” Said Boda. “So we started it here at Lake Street.”
