Caroline Co. Manure Storage Outbuilding Burns Down
RIDGELY, Md. – A poultry manure outbuilding was destroyed in a large fire over the weekend.
At 7:34 a.m. on May 30, firefighters responded to a structure fire on Oakland Road in Ridgely after it was discovered by a family member on the property. A total of 31 firefighters with the Ridgley Volunteer Fire company and other neighboring fire departments responded to the 100 foot by 50 foot wooden building. As the fire spread, it caused significant damage to the structure and nearby farm equipment. Crews worked for one hour to extinguish the blaze.
The total damage to the structure is estimated to be valued at $100,000. There were no smoke alarms or sprinklers present in the building.
The Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal responded to the scene, and determined the fire to be accidental and the result of spontaneous combustion of manure.
