Snow Hill, Md. – An environmental organization is highlighting the importance of gardening native species.

The Pollinator Garden Tour, a driving tour that celebrates what’s growing in private gardens around Wicomico County. Organizers hope that attendees get excited about planting native plants and supporting local pollinators. Representatives of the land-trust also wants gardeners to remember that native species are more resilient and have a greater chance of survival, creating habitat for pollinating insects like bees and butterflies.

“The point of this whole event really is to give our attendees a chance to learn more about native gardening. Increase the awareness of it and the importance of it, and the benefits of it.” says Margot Resto. Development Director of the Lower Shore Land Trust.

Land Trust representatives tell us that the recent drought conditions have delayed certain plants blooming but do not believe that this has hindered any long term growth.

Resto also says ” Strong habitat available for our pollinators, then the benefits to us as human beings but to the land in general, are much higher.”
