Smyrna Teen Arrested on Felony Assault after Hitting Child with Dirt Bike

SMYRNA, Del. – The Smyrna Police Department (SPD) has arrested a 15-year-old after they say he fled the scene of an accident that injured an 8-year-old child.

At 4:00 p.m. on Friday, May 15, officers were dispatched to Sunnyside Park within the Sunnyside Development in reference to a child being struck by a dirt bike. Upon arrival on the scene, police determined an 8-year-old boy was playing on the basketball courts when a juvenile suspect illegally operating a dirt bike ran into him, causing injury. The juvenile on the dirt bike then fled the scene without notifying authorities.

The 8-year-old boy was transported to Nemours Children’s Hospital for his injuries.

SPD units proceeded to search the area and located the operator of the dirt bike, identified as a 15-year-old male from Smyrna. Police say the teenager is also a resident of the Sunnyside Development.
