SALISBURY, Md. – The flag football NFL Play 60 is about encouraging healthy lifestyles and empowering youth to get active for at least 60 minutes a day.

The Salisbury Police Department organized the vital event for the community this weekend at Wicomico High School.

Captain Ryan Koerner, The Commander of SPD’s Criminal Investigation Division, said it helps boost the community. “The smiling faces, it’s just an outstanding collaboration with members of our community.”

As part of an initiative to ensure that young individuals remain active and maintain good health, the Salisbury Police Department welcomed children to Wicomico High School for an NFL Play 60 event, and the youth had an exceptionally enjoyable time.

The Salisbury Vikings team after a win “It’s great teamwork, good job to all my teammates, and yeah bro, the win was crazy.”

The kids got to learn the technical aspects of football, like proper footwork, blocking mechanics, and throwing a tight spiral.

Members of the community, like Salisbury University Head Football Coach Sherman Wood, attended to show support.”Recruiting is number one, but I tell you, I’m just impressed with the community, having the kids active,” said Coach Wood.

SU sophomore quarterback, Syrus McGowan, says these kids look up to him and his teammates. He wants to show that investment back into the youth that invests into the SU Football team.

“Same way they come to our games and support us, we want to come out and support them.”

Captain Koerner of Salisbury Police says one of the department’s initiatives is community-oriented policing, and events like these foster transparency, collaboration, and engagement.

“They see a lot of things on the news, they see us in a different light when we are out in the community, when we are having to do the job we are sworn to do. But this shows us a human being, it shows them we love football, we love sports, and how we want them to have a good time, as kids.”
